FAQS

What Is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is a specific form of psychotherapy that is typically used to treat individuals who have experienced traumatic events, adverse life experiences and/or negative core beliefs about oneself or the world

EMDR aims to alleviate distressing symptoms such as anxiety, panic attacks, nightmares, flashbacks, depression, compulsions, guilt/self-blame, and intrusive thoughts by reprocessing traumatic memories and reducing the emotional charge associated with them. EMDR can help individuals experience faster and significant symptom relief.

What is an EMDR Intensive?

EMDR intensive therapy involves concentrated sessions over a shorter period, usually several consecutive days. This intensive approach allows for more focused and accelerated treatment, potentially yielding faster results compared to traditional therapy.

Can EMDR be online and in-person?

Yes, EMDR can be done effectively online as well as in-person.  When we first connect, we will collaborate to figure out what works best for you given your therapy goals and your individual needs..

How is EMDR different from regular talk therapy?

Talk therapy, also known as psychotherapy or counseling, typically involves conversations between a therapist and a client. The therapist creates a safe and supportive environment for the client to discuss their thoughts, emotions, and experiences. The focus is on exploring the client's concerns, gaining insight into their problems, and developing coping strategies and solutions.

EMDR, on the other hand, is a specific type of therapy that combines elements of talk therapy with bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, hand taps, or auditory tones. It was originally developed to treat trauma-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During an EMDR session, the client is asked to recall distressing memories or experiences while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation. This process supports the client in the reprocessing of traumatic memories, reducing their emotional intensity and helping  to develop more adaptive beliefs and behaviors.

What will my treatment look like?

We will first spend some time speaking on the phone getting to know each other, discussing your therapy goals and answering any additional questions that you may have.

Your goals and needs will determine the amount of time we dedicate to this work together, ranging from 2 to 3 half day sessions (4 hours each day) to 2 to 3 full day sessions (7 hours each day).

We will discuss options of incorporating movement/yoga or expressive arts into our work for a fully immersive healing experience. (No prior experience needed with either)
